    A bad driver. Installed any new drivers/programs lately?

    Last time my explorer kept crashing was because I installed xfire.

    corrupt plugins, damaged registrey, bad hardware, corrupt windows, corrupt explorer file.

    Well, except viruses and bugs and …. if you meddle around in the Registry in some specific locations (like renaming the shell with some random name in place of explorer.exe), explorer.exe might not start, leading one to a desktop with only the wallpaper in view and nothing else, except it.

    Of course this is a minor problem, so one could just press ctrl+alt+del and start explorer.exe manually if he/she has that much knowledge. Other than this, I don’t know any other reasons for explorer.exe to crash.
