When I turn on my PC, I get an error message that says that my primary drive (hard disk drive) is not found. Below that, it says to press F1 to continue or F2 to run the setup utility. I’m confused about all this and don’t know what to do. Hopefully, somebody can help me out.

    The answer in the following:

Normally this message occurs when the hard drive has died. First thing to check would be to open the caser and make sure all cables leading to the drive are plugged in and secure. If they are then the next thing would be to check the bios to see if there is a hard drive self test utility. Run this and see if it gives any recommendations. Other than that hard drive is probably toast and beyond recovery. Have had rare instances in this case where you can use ERD commander to recover some data after letting the drive cool a while or placing in the refrigerator for a while. Hope this helps

check your hard drive is connected right with the red strip to pin 1 if thats OK check the BIOS and use the “auto” on all primary and secondary tables, last resort partition your hard drive

and what happens when you hit f1?

Could be a bad hard drive, bad battery (forgetting your settings), bad cable, etc. etc. etc.

how could you get that error message ???

any how check for the hard drive in ur system and also the connection .. . it might be loosely connected …

Open your box. Turn off power before, disconnect power cord.
And see if two cables are connected to the hard disk properly.

Try to take out the cables and reinsert them, and see if they work.

If not, then you’d better call a hardware technician to have a look at it. But if you want to do it yourself, then take the hard disk out, and attach to some other working pc, as a slave disk, and see if it still works. Otherwise you may have to say goodbye to your hard disk.

Try this. When you type in your error message it should give you explicit step by step instructions.

    Good Luck

This could happen if you have a disk in the A: drive. Check to make sure there is no disc in your floppy drive. If there is, take the disc out and try again. It should boot normally.

Sounds like your harddrive has crashed. Which means you will need a new harddrive. The only other thing I can think of is the cable is bad.

reformat you harddrive or if you got it from Dell ect. they gave you a goast disk put it PS. you will lose everthing on you hard drive

    Answer by Fisherman Greg
Run the F2 setup. This is taking you to the CMOS chip which all you have to do is let it open up and see if your Hard drive shows up and if it dosen’t show that you have one, have it search for one and SAVE it and exit and the computer will reboot itself and that F1 and F2 shouldn’t show up again.

      1. Unplug your Computer/Shut Off
      2. Open your Computer Case
      3. Unplug your HDD/IDE Cable wait for a few seconds
      4. Plug again the IDE/HDD Cable
      5. Turn on your computer
      6. Press F2 to run the CMOS/BIOS Setup
      7. Detect your Hard Disk Drive

Note: If there is no Hard Drive found try to Slave your HDD… if error occurs try to change a new HDD/IDE Cable.

      8. Save and Exit BIOS

If there’s no response with your HDD… try to contact your technical support…

      Enjoy!
