My windows xp operating system will not boot up after a huge wind and rain storm killed my power to my home and consequently my computer. My computer was on and operational when the power went off. Where do I start?

You may need to re-install the Win XP. Follow the steps below:

    1. Get your PC to boot from the CD-ROM drive

    2. Plop in the Win XP CD. Reboot and get to the Windows Setup.

    3. Do NOT go into the Recovery Console but go to next step to setup windows.

    4. When it prompts you to install a fresh copy or repair the current version. Choose to repair.

    5. Follow the instaructions on the screen. Mostly all you have to do is just wait for the process to complete.

Your windows should boot up once it is done and you should be able to see all your old contents again.

if the computer does not even power on, then it could be a fuse in the mains lead that has failed try a diiferent lead and or replace the fuse, and try to power up the computer.
if the computer boots but the operating system fails to boot, then you need to boot in safe mode and run chkdsk (chjeck disk) to fully diagnose your computer and repair any problems.
if you can not boot to safe mode then you are going to have to find your original install CD/ windows XP CD and run the set up and select repair.

if that fails then your hard drive may have failed and so you may need to buy a new one.

of course this could be a result of a fuse blowing in your PSU if this si the case you can either take it to a professional and get the fuse replaced or buy a new PSU (power supply).
there are so many causes of the problem it is hard to know what is correct in your case.

to prevent this happening in the future get an U.P.S. (uninteruptable Pwer Suply) that way should you get the same set of circumstance again that caused this problem the minute the house power goes off you safely shutdown your computer to prevent this kind of damage.
It is also strongly recomended that you get a surge protector on all your electriacl appliances and especialy your computer.
they cost from as little as £10 for a single outlet with phone line protection or the same £10 for a four socket extension cord with one meter cable.
I got my surge protectors from staples here in England.
the belkin brand that i use come with a level of insured value (should the surge protector fail to protect your equipment from damage) depending on the protector insured value can be as high as £35,000 (on one of the protectors i have) and may be a higher value on different models.

but as i said it is really a case of trial and error to trace the problem.
