    Answer by Chris
I would fix a few machines on the side, preferably for someone they know or a relative. Build a PC or 2 and sell them.

    Answer by Mike N

Build a working computer that stays working for more than one boot. Make a really fancy one. Start answering questions about computers on Yahoo! and try and get a s many best answers as possible.

Help other people around you. I didn’t run a business. But I have fixed many hardware issue on PC. Before when I had lot of free time, Many of my neighbor and friend called me to fix when they have a problem. I did not ask them money. But most of time, they insisted me to take money like .

    Answer by Carling
It is not worth doing these days… it will not pay you to repair or build systems..

when your starting a business one needs to work out the full details,

you build a computer for someone.. you have to guarantee if 12 months.
Now lets say you build a computer base unit at a cost to you for 0.00 then add the rest of the setup

    Box 0.00
    mouse keyboard .00
    Monitor 0.00
    Windows XP/Vista 0.00
    Cost of building it .00
    Profit 0.000..

    package = 0.00
You can’t com peat with the stores at that price..

now you get a system go down..
now you have to work on that computer,, to find out whats wrong with it.. (Unpaid time) you have to send the parts back to the manufactures.. this can and does take weeks your customer is not going to be with out their computer for weeks thats fore sure..

you have to put it right.. quick … out of your own pocket. now the manufactures say the damage is the fault of neglect and don’t renew the part,, you can’t claim that back off the customer… you now stand the bill.. you’ve lost money… on that deal…

i built my first computer when i was 12, in the summer. i had money, and idk how i got the idea, but through trial and error, i built it, ever since ive been learning thousands of things about computers. im only 17 and, lol well, i own my own business icon razz Q&A: computer repairing? I just started it up but ever since, ive gotten over 30 jobs! tonight i have a job setting up a wireless network, hooking up her printer and starting her new comp up and running. it pays awesome, keeping my habit of skating so much the tail of my board grinds off alive icon biggrin Q&A: computer repairing? you are probably too young for this type of work…even I think im too young, just learn everything you possibly can! learn the programs, learn the os, learn the computers, the history of them, theres tons of things to learn, I know even i wont be able to understand everything about computers, but i love your entrepreneurship, you remind me of me, good luck and hey. if you ever need any help. send me an email. id be glad to help you for free icon smile Q&A: computer repairing? jamiefeltes@gmail.com

You are not going to like my answer, but you need to hear it for your own good. There is a lot to read here, because this is a very important topic for someone who want to do what you have asked about.

I started in computer support before the first DOS machine was invented. That is years before the first Windows machine and the first Mac. This is said only so you know that I have a lot of experience in this business.

I am assuming, from what you said that you are very young, probably in your teens. I am also assuming that you live in a country where English is spoken as the primary language. If those assumptions are not correct, I might have to change some of my comments.

Personally, I wouldn’t hire you to work for me, or do any work on my machines. The reason? Your use of the language is so poor that I couldn’t have confidence in you.

Anyone who won’t use a spelling checker, or punctuation won’t do good enough work to satisfy me or my clients. Everyone has typos, but yours appear to be just plain sloppy writing. That is okay for text messaging, but not for writing anything that needs to be seriously considered.

I’m not looking for an English major to hire, but the errors that you made reflect very poorly on your attention to details. A computer person who doesn’t pay attention to details can’t do a good enough job to satisfy me or my clients.

You also have no business experience at this point. There are a lot of things about being in business other than the skill to work on computers. Do you know accounting, advertising, customer service, taxes, purchasing in volume, and writing business documents, just to name a few things that a business owner does?

You would be better off going to work for someone else to learn more about the business aspect of this industry. You will learn a lot of things that you wouldn’t have even dreamed of. There is something surprising every day.

What do you do with a customer who keeps opening up his computer and unplugging wires? What if the customer wants you to pick up the computer and deliver it? They want it fixed today and you are already too busy to even start it for three days?

You want me to buy your machine at 0 when xxxxxx brand is on sale at the local xxxxxx store for 0? I want 4 hour turn around because my computer is critical to my company; can you guarantee that?

My computer is broken, I want a new one RIGHT NOW, not a repair because it’s only a year old and it should last for 20 years; like my washing machine! It’s 3am and I can’t get my e-mail, come over and fix it NOW!

My sister’s friend’s neighbor’s 12 year old cousin “fixed” my machine and now it doesn’t work right. You need to fix it under warranty because it isn’t that old and I bought it from you. My sister’s friend’s neighbor’s 12 year old cousin said that this computer is a piece of **** and you put all the wrong parts in it, I want a full refund because it’s only 10 months old.

One previous answer talked about the fact that it costs more to buy the parts than you would pay for a complete computer from a major name brand. How are you going to handle that issue?

What about a customer who wants the computer to do things it wasn’t designed to do? Or the one who hooked it up wrong? The one who refused to buy a surge supressor and the computer died because of a surge? The customer who’s only problem is that he doesn’t know what he is doing?

The customer who takes an hour of consultation on what to buy then goes to another place because it is cheaper? The one who special orders something exotic and changes his mind because another store had it on special at under your cost?

I deal with some of these issues every week.

Don’t give up on doing this some day, but you need more experience before starting a full time business. I do like the ideas in some of the previous answers about starting off slowly by working on things for friends. That will help your parents gain confidence in your skills and help you learn how to deal with some of the unknown issues.

You will also learn that you cannot treat the client’s computer the same way you treat your own. Some client have gotten extremely angry with me for making what I thought were significant improvements to their machine. They told me it was set up the way THEY wanted it.

It’s an interesting business, but there are so many things that a person has to learn to do a good job. That takes time and a lot of patience.
