computer troubleshooting help–: I need some help with my computer? Troubleshooting?
I have a Acer Aspire 3000 laptop that I got a couple of years ago. The battery doesn’t hold power for very long so I’m guessing I need a new one. The problem is my computer is not getting power or something. I have to hold the power cord into my computer to get it to work. Sometimes that doesn’t even work and when you press the power button the little indacator lights for battery and outlet power don’t even flash. Is the cord messed up? Where can I get a new one if I need it?
The answer in the following: (Hint: The reader is not the correct identification.)
Answer by Heinz M
It could be the cord or the jack in the computer itself. ~
Answer by DOUGLAS M
If you have to hold the cord it’s bad, it will probobly be less expensive to replace rather than repair
Answer by cb98678
Could be the cord (lets hope so) or could be the connector on the laptop. As for a new cord EBAY, CRAIGS LIST , OR contact acer.
If its the connector, find someone that is good with soldering.

Batteries don’t last forever and it sound like you need a new one.
You can run the computer with the battery removed, but it sounds like you are having trouble with the power connector plug.
Do you have a TANDY or Radio Shack close by – you can get a replacement plug pack from them.
Answer by sosguy
Is does indeed sound like the cord is shorting out.
Here is one site that sells them:

dealer or thieft store
Answer by Deron K
doesn’t sound like the battery @ all… the fact that you’re holding to power cord for it to hold a charge, you’ll probably need to get a new power cord for that model laptop.

Q&A–: Computer troubleshooting help?
I just finished biulding my computer. It turns on but wont boot. What could the problem be? The cpu fan is spinning, does this mean the processors working? The hard drive is also making noise.
The specs are::
ASUS P5N32 SLI DELUXE MOBO
INTEL CORE 2 DUO 2.13GHZ
SEAGATE 500GB HD
2GB CORSAIR DDR2 RAM
EVGA Geforce 8800 gts
I turn on the computer and it powers up, but the monitor says no connection. Can anyone help?
Tried, reinstalling everything. Still no use. I notice there is an 8 hole/pin socket. But my power supply only has a 6 hole plug/
The following is the answer: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)
Answer by medic391
with the absence of a post beep code, try another monitor. then try reseating everything including the cpu
Answer by Simon T
The fan spinning just means that you are getting power to it. Same for the hard drive.
Unplug everything and re-inset it making sure that everything is well seated.
Try it with only one memory DIMM. If you have one, try another video card.
Try it without the hard drive – you should be able to get into BIOS.
Answer by Bubbie
6 pin is a PCI-E power connector.
8-pin EATX12V connector to power a processor (you can plug the standard 4-pin ATX12V connector (providing no less than 13 A for Pentium 4/EE and no less than 16 A for Pentium D/EE). PSU with an 8-pin connector may be required for future processors), 4-pin (peripheral) additional connector in case of a PSU with a 20-pin connector (mandatory for SLI mode)
The EATX12V connector provides more ampacity to the board so if your power supply has the 8pin EATX12V connector, it is a good idea to use it. But if your power supply doesn’t have this or if it is modular and you didn’t connect an additional 4pin 12v/gnd X2 … and your system is working OK, don’t worry about it. Some D900 series Intel processors, especially the extreme edition, require lots of power and the 8pin EATX12V helps supply it.

Perplexed penguin! My geek-friends gather around my Apple MacBook Pro, to configure Ubuntu for the data-projector. The plaster of paris Tux is made by Rahul Motiyar, natively from a family of designers and skilled carpenters. Rahul worked with open source hardware and design for multitouch systems with Anirudh Sharma and friends. Rahul’s now selected for an Interaction Design course (M.Des) at IDC, IIT Bombay. Meanwhile, our struggle to get the laptop to interact with the projector continues.
Invited to deliver talks at Rajasthan’s largest and most prestigious engineering college which is spread across 337 acres: the Engineering College of Bikaner (ECB) www.ecb.ac.in/.
ECB has around 6,000 students enrolled on its campus, out of which around 2,500 alone are in IT and Computer Science courses.
Delivered two talks on Linux and Free & Open Source Software (FOSS): ‘How to Avoid the Axe Effect’; and ‘How to Make a Dent in the Universe’. The talks were delivered at the ‘FOSS GN09 event’ which was cleverly dove-tailed with the college’s yearly techfest mega-event, called ‘Sakshama’. An ancient Sanskrit word, ‘Sakshama’ means ‘skilled; competent; adept’. The 2009 incarnation of the event, held from 28th to 31st October, was called ‘Sakshama GN09’, to highlight ‘Generation Next’. www.sakshama.org.
And what a Generation Next! They also sought my help and mentoring in launching their own on-campus Linux Users Group (LUG), www.lugb.in. Am quite impressed with their active mailing-lists and outreach activities. These guys and gals are rocking! Together with its founders, we launched LUG-Bikaner at the ‘Sakshama GN09’ event-night, on an outdoor stage in front of an audience of over 2,500.
ECB has around 1,200 computers on-campus, and with the personal laptops and desktops of students, totals at around 4,000 PCs. Till date, LUG-Bikaner has migrated over 500 computers to Linux, and still counting. Plus, they also reach out to other colleges and institutions within Rajasthan to spread the awareness of this ‘muft and mukt’ vision of computing. After all, who can understand freedom better than the royal state of Rajasthan in India?
