do you have the xp disc for your system?, if so insert the disc and it will give the option to repair windows. hopefully repairing it will do the trick if not you’ll have to a re-install or factory reset…..good luck

Use the Windows XP disk and select the (r) to repair windows.

    This fixed my computer

    Use the Recovery Console
    1. Use the Windows 2000 Setup disks to restart the computer, or use the Windows 2000 CD-ROM to restart the computer.
    2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair the Windows 2000 installation.
    3. Press C to repair the Windows 2000 installation by using the Recovery Console.
    4. Type the number that corresponds to the Windows installation that you want to repair, and then press ENTER. For example, type 1, and then press ENTER. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
229716 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/229716/) Description of the Windows Recovery Console
    5. Type the Administrator password, and then press ENTER.
    6. Type map, and then press ENTER. Note the drive letter that is assigned to the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.
    7. Type the following commands, pressing ENTER after you type each one, where drive is the drive letter that you typed in step 4 of “Method 2: Use the Recovery Console,” of this article:
    copy drive:\i386\ntldr c:\

    copy drive:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
If you are prompted to overwrite the file, type y, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: In these commands, there is a space between the ntldr and c:\, and between ntdetect.com and c:\.

Your computer are trying to boot from a network, to resolve this change the boot sequence to HDD first on the BIOS setup.

I’m about to repair / reinstall XP tonight (whichever is necessary) and was wondering whether either method is able to preserve files. There’s a folder on my desktop that is very important. What options do I have for saving it?

Go to that site and download the Live CD, the latest version: nttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
You can do it from your friend’s Internet. Read the instructions there, by the way. Burn the CD (there are also instructions there for doing that) and get back to your computer. Start it up, just for opening the CD ROM drive and insert the Live CD in there. Shut it down. Start it up and boot from the CD. Follow the steps on your screen till you reach Windows. Back Up anything you like to a new CD (or DVD). Remove the Live CD. You’ve done.

For a complete step-by-step guide, you can also read here: nttp://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/
That’s an excellent tutorial, by the way.

    Hope this helps
    Steve
