    I’m thinking about starting a computer repair place at my house. Mostly what I want to do is the simple things, like virus removal, backup, installing os, etc. Does anyone have any tips on how I can get something like this going?

    local zoning laws may not allow that – especially if you will be having customers coming in and out fo your house

    The first question is – are you planning on picking up the computers to fix or are customers going to drop them off.expect customers to drop off, you need to check with your local zoning board to see how your area is zoned – probably residential, Residential zoning may pose a problem since having customers drop off creates traffic and maybe a violation of zoing laws. Usually, zoning boards will allow you to operate out of your home as long as clients are not coming to your door. Once you get folks coming to your door, you start getting into trouble.

    Once you have cleared any hurdles, you need to start advertising your services. Bulletin Boards at local grocery stores or community centers are good places to start. Offer a small discount to first time customers. Create a web site and get links to it posted. Pick up a few books on what is termed “guerilla marketing” (and check out relevant web sites) – they should give more info on cheap or free marketing of your services.

    Workspace – may be an issue.

    Marketing research. Survey your local market for on-site and drop-off services. Get pricing. Get a list of services provided. Note any unique services or service guarantees.

    Marketing plan. Answer the question “Why would anyone want my service over all the other available services to me?” This will help you develop a unique selling proposition. This should help you refine your target market and your message.

    1.) Buy Some Hard wares like Hard Disk, Mother board, video card processor, etc…
    2.) Buy some softwares like a windows vista or xp software u need to know how to format a pc and put some hardwares
    3.) Download or buy a sowtares like anti – viruses, office software, cleaning tools etc…

    Just like any business, you need to define your target market and determine how to effectively reach them. Some possible target markets include:

    - Small business owners, who more often than not do not have a dedicated employee for computer repair needs. Most of small businesses also would rather outsource the repair and maintenance of their computers rather than spend too much time away from their core business to do the repairs needed.

    - Home business owners and one person businesses whose computers are extremely essential to the operation of their business

    - Retired baby boomers are another important possible target market for this business. Most of the old folks will not drive to town to get their computer fixed. Plus, many of them are not willing or do not have the technical know-how to do even simple fixes or installs.
