Kaspersky and NOD32 are the best anti-virus programs available.
Norton is the best selling anti-virus program and has a high detection rate but it takes control of your system and is almost impossible to completely remove.
AVG Free is a wildly popular free anti-virus but has a very low detection rate. Avoid this one. If you want a free anti-virus Avast! and Avira are both better than AVG.

Paid…………. Kaspersky Internet Security 2009
Free…………. Avast 4.8 Home Edition
EDIT: Kaspersky about bucks and YES free Avira Antivir is VERY safe from a very well known and respected company…
