Recently, a gentleman, (and I use the term loosely) took his computer to a repair shop to have a virus or some such removed. The technician discovered that he had child porn downloaded on the computer. He reported the gentleman to the authorities.

Was that a violation of the gentleman’s privacy rights, or did the technician do the right thing?

    The answer in the following:

you dont have any rights if you do something illegal. In fact it would have been a crime for the technicin to not call the police.

    Answer by Jeff G
Nope, I think you are required to report them. He did the right thing regardless.

    Answer by Terri M
He waived privacy (what an idiot) when he let the guy work on his computer.

Yes; I am very glad the techie called the cops.

    Answer by Catherine G
That was the repairs persons responsibility to report that perv !!!!!

    Answer by americanfreeman
nope..very legal. More than a few dumb porn addicts have been caught this way.

No. The repairman is required by law to do this the same way a repairman is required to report you if you have illegally downloaded music or videos on your computer from a file sharing network such as limewire.

He presented a machine to a stranger. If it had pot inside the box, the tech could be in trouble, for possession. If the guy wanted privacy, he could have fixed his own problem. When he gave the box to the tech, he gave up rights.

Glad the tech called the cops!

I’m not an attorney, but the repair technician was not looking for any criminal material. He was just doing his job. I think he did the right thing. He probably saved some children from his horrible behavior.

same thing happens if you try to develop film that has ‘child-porn’ on it…..many new parents (taking pics of their baby in the bathtub) have discovered this

    Answer by jackson
He did the right thing. Say this guy gets busted later. He could say the tech put it on there.
