Last week, I was downloading some torrents and I downloaded a virus through one of them. I scanned and everything but somehow, I now have a virus on my computer. If I take my computer into a local shop, will they turn me in if they find out about my torrents?

    The following is the answer:

I doubt it but you might as well figure all the stuff you thought you got for free youre gonna spend double at the repair shop LOL! Now you gonna go back to downloading torrents and p2p or have you wized up a bit?

Typically, you have nothing to worry about with computer repair shops. If you get turned in for illegal downloads, it is most likely going to be through your Internet service provider. Biggest reason not to download stuff illegally in the first place. icon smile Q&A: will a computer repair company turn me in to the RIAA if they find torrents on my computer?

I would play it safe and assume they would. If i was gonna do that, i would save all or most of my stuff on a flash drive. (for precautionary purposes) icon smile Q&A: will a computer repair company turn me in to the RIAA if they find torrents on my computer?

i would say that it all depends on the company, most of them will be a no, what will they gain by it, nothing, what will they lose a customer. Now on to the problem, what anti virus are you using? is it up to date? if not do an update and then do another full system scan. if that is no help download this malware scanner install it and update and have it do a full system scan. here is the link http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button try it and see what it finds. If that doesn’t take care of the problem, I would suggest a full system restore if you have a name brand computer like hp, dell they always have and complete system restore either on partition or on cds that came with your computer. if you have any other questions feel free to mail me

No, because most repair companies technically install windows in ways that are not legal.

Torrents and other P2P file sharing is a sure-fire way to catch an infection at some stage or another. P2P file sharing is one of the danger-zones associated with infection/malware and should be avoided at all costs. And that’s not even touching the legal-side of things…

Have you tried scanning with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware? Both are available in free versions and are very good. Install, update and scan with both (one after the other). Hopefully one should be able to sort your infection out.

As for whether a computer shop would “turn you in”? They may, they may not – in the end, it comes down to just who is fixing your computer (and whether the shop has a policy on this kind of stuff). Generally I would say they wouldn’t – but don’t rely or fall back on that! The chance is still there…
