By admin | December 25, 2010
Hi,I did the following:
Help!: What are the best ways to avoid getting a computer virus????

Rainy:The pictures have nothing to do with the content!!
My stepdad got one on his computer a few hours ago from clicking on a website he thought was real, but ended up being an imitation of a legitimate webpage. My question is- How do i know before clicking when something is potentially harmful? Are there ever warning signs?
I’ve got norton antivirus, but it’s expired, although it still protects me partially? And spysweeper. Is that good, or do i need more anti-virus software?

You need to pay attention when you click on something. Some of those web sites do look like they are official. But if you go to a web page and it says it is scanning for viruses, it’s a fake. Web pages don’t do that. If you get WOT (web of Trust) it will also come up with a warning on bad web sites. It’s also very important to have a updated anti-virus program. New malware is written everyday. Just leaving your anti-virus program for a week without updates, leaves you wide open to new malware. You are better off with a free anti-virus program that gets updates, than a paid program that has expired.
If you use Internet Explorer or firefox get WOT for it. Make sure you are also using the built in protection that the browser offers.

You have to get a good anti virus and update it. Personally I suggest to go for Kaspersky, K7 or Quickheal.

An out of date Norton is the same as not having an antivirus program at all. I’d say you should uninstall Norton and download one of the free antivirus software packages out there. Avast! is good. NEVER EVER have 2 antivirus programs installed at the same time, it KILLS PC performance.
Also a good privacy protector like ccleaner (also free) is helpful, and ad-aware is well worth it. Run ‘em both frequently
Next, never surf the internet while logged into a windows machine as an admin. I break that rule a lot, but being logged in as a restricted user keeps a lot of viruses and spyware from getting a hold.
Keep the OS up to date. You;d be amazed how many PCs get stuck with old viruses because they never took microsoft up on a free upgrade.
Use a browser like mozilla foxfire unless for one particular web page you need an IE function. foxfire is less prone to things, though not immune.
