You should try using MSCONFIG in Windows XP to disable some of the unnecessary programs that automatically load on start-up. Disabling these programs will help your computer boot faster and crash less.
1. In Windows XP, go to Start > Run
2. Type MSCONFIG in the “Open:” box and then either press enter on your keyboard or click on the OK button.
3. This launches Microsoft’s System Configuration Utility. Click on the Startup tab (the tab at the far right).
4. This takes you to a page with a list of “startup items.” Startup items are programs that are automatically loaded every time you turn on your computer. Some startup programs are absolutely necessary, others are simply a waste of RAM.
Remember, disable only those programs that you recognize and don’t need to have running all the time. When in doubt, leave it on.
5. Click on the OK button.
6. A message will pop up telling you that you must restart your computer before these changes will take effect. Click on “Yes” and your computer will automatically reboot.
7. That’s it! Your computer should now boot faster and crash less.
And you should also update our Antivirus software and run a virus scan,

You can run antivirus and antispyware programs, but the sad fact is if you have found one virus on your computer, you probably have several. Cleaning the computer now requires you to follow these steps, because modern viruses and spyware entrench themselves in files that your computer needs in order to run:
1. Virus-check your data files (not application files– you have installer CDs for those).
2. Back up the data files, getting them off your hard drive.
3. Get your original operating system CDs that came with your computer.
4. Boot your computer from the operating system CD.
5. Select the option that erases your hard drive and then reinstall your system software.
6. Turn on your software firewall that came with your operating system.
7. Reconnect to the internet, and download *all* Windows updates, no matter how long it takes.
8. Reinstall your application software, and update the applications as much as you can.
9. Reinstall your data files.
10. Create a limited user account on your system that does *not* have administrator access, and web surf only from this account.
Yes, this is a pain in the butt. No, there is no other way. No, antivirus and antispyware programs cannot fix this problem on its own.
So, what do you do in the future?
1. Never click on links you find in an e-mail.
2. Never open an e-mail attachment, ever.
3. Only download files from a reputable website that you know is on the up-and-up.
4. Never use bit-torrent and other file-sharing programs.
5. Never use an unsolicited drive-checking site.
6. Turn off all java and java scripting by default, and only enable java and java scripting for sites that you know you can trust.
7. Never read an unsolicited e-mail, and delete spam immediately. It is possible to be hacked by reading an e-mail alone.
Please adhere to the ‘dont’s’ I provided above, because you will have to repeat the cleaning steps that I listed first *every time you get infected.* Anti-spyware and anti-virus programs are good to have, but they are a second line of defense. The best way to protect your system is you, and changing your behavior.
Good luck!

MOST infections can be cleaned yourself by following the following steps.
Download the following tools (Some malware will attempt to block your access to antimalware sites so you may have to download these from a different computer and copy them to a transferable media (flashdrive, cdr/dvdr, thumb drive…)
Malwarebytes – nttp://www.malwarebytes.org/
Superantispyware – nttp://www.superantispyware.com/
Boot your computer into “Safe Mode” by pressing F8 as soon as the windows logo appears (You have to be quick).
Once you are in safe mode install MalWareBytes and run a full scan of your computer (Once again some malware attempts to prevent you from installing and using tools that remove the virus so If you are unable to install MalWareBytes Rename the file “MBAM.EXE” to something else. I typically name it “xxxxx.exe” )
After MalWareBytes has finished and cleaned what it found then install and run SuperAntiSpyWare.
There are some malware that cannot be removed from SafeMode if the machine is infected. This is often the case with rootkits as they compromise the kernel or core ‘critical’ system files. For those situations you will need to boot into a clean image to perform the virus removal. There are a few ways to do this I typically use a clean boot CD such as UBCD4WIN or Knoppix or the Avira AntiVir Rescue CD or the Kaspersky Rescue CD. Knoppix is Linux Based and has a lot of utilities and tools for fixing your computer from all sorts of problems. The other three options are Windows Based. UBCD4WIN has a lot of tools for system maintenance. The other two are specifically designed for virus removal using two very good anti-virus programs. All 4 are excellent choices and I carry all 4 with me as they each have their own strengths.

If you have a virus, you should download Malwarebytes.
Malwarebytes will get rid of just about everything.
Also download SUPERAntiSpyware. It will get rid of any spyware on yuor computer. Both scanners are like partners. Malwarebytes comes in with a big hammer and smashes all your viruses. While SUPERAntispyware cleans it up. That the best way I can explain it : )
They are both entirely free.
What Antivirus do you currently have installed? Do you even have one?
If not, you need to get one ASAP. Viruses are everywhere. Email, Webpages, Music, Downloads, you name it. And if you don’t have an Antivirus, good luck keeping your computer alive. Even if you have a MAC or Linux, it doesn’t matter. It’s nearly impossible to avoid viruses without antivirus software. I just wanted to point that out.
When you get an Antivirus, do not fall for the hype and popularity of AVG. AVG is a nice little product. It does what it’s supposed to. But it sure isn’t perfect. It can not detect Rootkits. Rootkits are very bad. And you do not want them on your computer. As much is you may be told to, do not download AVG. It’s detection rate isn’t even 80 percent.
Download Comodo and Avira Antivir
Comodo is one of the best software Firewalls. You may think windows firewall will do the job. All it will do is sit there. It will miss virtually everything. Comodo has not missed anything so far in my 4 months of using it.
You also need Avira. Avira has a detection rate of about 99%
Comodo and Avira work perfectly together. If something were to slip pass Comodo, Avira would catch it. They are both entirely free.
Here’s how to remove you virus:
First, Download Malwarebytes.
Then, run a Full Scan on your drives.
Wait until it’s finished. (You may want to go play a game, go to work, or go eat while it scans because it takes a little while)
Once it is done, Remove Selected items (Your computer may have to restart) Once done scanning with Malwarebytes, scan you computer with SUPERAntiSpyware. Once that’s all done with, your viruses should be gone.
Then download Comodo Firewall. (The free version)
Once it’s downloaded, Make Sure to disable the antivirus part of it. Leave the Defense+ on, but turn the real time scanner off. If you don’t, Comodo will Conflict with Avira.
Now download Avira Antivir. These combinations will protect you from further virus infections. Also, if you want to know what websites have viruses and which don’t before you even click on them, you may consider trying MyWebOfTrust.
Good Luck! If you have more virus questions, I’d be happy to answer them.
What ever you do, make sure to download an antivirus! Preferably the ones I just recommended. They can protect you from computer killing, money stealing dangers!

what is a computer virus
Q&A–: What makes a person want to create a computer virus?
Of all the things that people could do, why is creating a virus that sends people into a panic and causes widespread havoc on that list of things? Recently, there was a new virus that can actually be spread through USB flash drives, and steals passwords (or something close to that). What could possibly posses a person to make something that has the potential to mess up thousands of computers and costing the computer owners money? Its crazy. Please, provide your input.
The answer in the following: (Hint: The reader is not the correct identification.)
Answer by Shuo C
There are many reasons.
1. The person wants to make money, either by stealing your information, as you stated, and accessing your bank account, etc. or stealing your identity and using it for their own to save their credit and let you take all the heat.
2. They do it simply because they can, or to test their computer skills
3. They want to get back at you for something or just do it for thrills
That’s the sad truth. Now, since there are millions of people out there designing viruses for exactly this reason, they are also hurting themselves, but don’t care as long as they get what they want

To make you pay for an anti-virus software which they also write?
Answer by SynfulVisions
The problem isn’t the virus makers. The problem is this mob mentality the ignorant public tends to have. Just look at the Conficker worm. Anybody who had an antivirus and automatic updates enabled had almost no risk for it, but everybody still freaked out.
As for why they write them, mostly it’s for money. A large botnet is worth millions. Boredom, fame, wanting to be cool play a part too.
I’ve written a few viruses myself, but only as proof of concept to test out security holes. I never bothered to release one. I have been very tempted to release an OSX worm, there are about 8 ways to infect a default OSX install at the moment, and the OSX community needs a good kick in the ass. I doubt I will, I’m too lazy to be a real programmer. I prefer being an administrator.
Answer by Marvin the Martian
Same reason why people find it humorous when someone accidentally slips over. Whilst the preceding comparison may not be to the same degree as someone who enjoys writing computer viruses, it does have a fundamental root – sardonicism, of which means that one finds humour in the pain of others. The psychology that some people who write computer viruses adhere to is that they enjoy watching their very own creation obliterate and eliminate everything and anything it meets in its path. It then produces a sense of egoism, in that the person who created the virus then believes that he/she is skilled and intelligent enough (almost to the likes of a god) to bring the world down to its knees.
For the most part, that is what computer viruses are made for, and unfortunately, the most serious among them have creators who conform to the above mentality. There are smaller off-shoot reasons that can cause someone to create computer viruses. Some do it for political purposes, and by injuring the corporation/group’s cyber infrastructure, they can easily make a point across. Another reason that some people create computer viruses is to deliberately find flaws within a cyber infrastructure. People who have this sort of mentality are often like the very first I described, but are more like the “White Hats”, in that they notify the corporation/firm/school etc, of the weaknesses in their technological infrastructure, and suggest ways to improve it. The more business-minded of them create their own antivirus software and sell it to the group(s) harmed.
That’s about it. And beware of Conficker. It digested my school!

SO THERE YOU HAVE THE TRUTH
Answer by Relax
Well, people make viruses jsut for the fun of it. they like to mess up the persons computer so they will have to refix it. Mostly, they make viruses to hack bank computers or enterprises. They get valuable information like bank passwords etc and then they can access all their files. The reason i jsut gave is the main one. they made a virus through USB flash drives because many people use those nowdays. My school’s computer had the 2009 virus: Conflicker
Answer by mango, punch.
there just assholes plain and simple, they do it to steal money or ‘just for fun’.
this computer i have is the 3rd one in two years. the most recent one i got on my last computer was a restarting one. if i tired to turn my computer on it would start up then 30 secs later it would shut down. i was told by a computer technician that i took it too, that that particular virus was made for “funnies”. i didn’t find it funny, in the slightest.
one of the answers here said that they do it so you will buy their antivirals programs and that is also true.
i guess there is nothing we can do to stop it, just as long as we keep our anti-virus programs up-to-date, which is what i intended to do this time.
Answer by ChocoToT
its funny! i mean come on.. have you ever played a prank on someone and loved their angry/frustrated reaction and thought
“omgosh this is fun!” .. i have! and you love it. the same goes for making computer viruses. i made a pop up on my sisters computer so that when she clicked okay or exit it would shut the computer down.. it was hilarious! i kept it there for about three days before i got caught and had to remove it.. but man it was worth it!

If your computer is infected with a virus you will need to download antivirus software to disinfect it. If it is malware you will will need to install something like malwarebytes at http://malwarebytes.org to take care of the malware.
