My laptop came with 60days of McAfee, which is about to expire. It’s expensive to renew! What is the most affordable/ most reliable software to buy? Thanks!

AVG its efficient and well as light on your computer

If you want a free one, I’d recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.
If you want a paid one, I like Kaspersky or Panda Security, but there are a bunch of others, there are many mores all of which have trials that you can download and install. Just google for the top anti-viruses of 2010, see which ones they are and try them out then pick the one you liked the most.
However I’d stay far away from Norton and McAffee

I use Avira, it’s free and I’ve never had an issue.

go to download.com and get AVG and Spybot Search & Destroy. AVG is automatic but Spybot needs to be run about once a week manually, get the updates, immunize, then search for problems and fix them. There isn’t one you can buy that is better than this. These are free. As a double check run housecall.trendmicro.com also.

I’ve used Microsoft Security Essentials on all my clients and they don’t have a problem with their computer, very easy to use and it’s free!

Avast is about the lightest one. http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html It’s not bad as long as you kill the woman who won’t shut up (turn the voice announcements off).
