Q&A–: What should I major in? MEGA-HELP NEEDED!?
Ok I’m a high school junior going to start the college apps process and I’m really confused about what major to choose. Firstly, I love design and technology. I’m into graphic design, computer animation, web design (web design, not web programming), 2D and 3D graphics, visual effects, game design, game development and things like that. But the problem is, these careers don’t pay much in the future…and money is a big issue. I don’t want a boring old job in an office everyday, but I do want an exciting job in which I can use my interests and talent effectively! So which of these fields is the best and most-paying to get into? And by the time I enter a career, its probably gonna be 2014 so the industry’s growth rate is an issue aswell. Can anyone help me decide?

My best advice is to not go into college with a predetermined major. You need to keep your mind and options open. When you apply be sure to apply to colleges that offer most of what you think you might be interested in. Your first year should be spent taking required basic education classes as well as intro level classes in the areas that you are interested. Do not attemp to declare your major until after your first year. I changed my major 4 times and in the end probably didn’t get the right degree because I didn’t have a good academic advisor. Good Luck!

Major in what appeals to you, what you have to get “out of your system” if that is what is needed. I’ve known people getting a degree in music performance and gone on to med school, theology school, law. Do what works. Professors who give recommendations for grad school look for brightness, eagerness to learn, ability to write, turn in papers timely and don’t ask for extensions. Main thing is get going, and get it done.

It’s good that you recognize that your interests don’t pay. Better to realize that now than go to school and get a Fine Arts degree and have nothing but student loans to show for it while you clerk at Target.
Another option is to not go to college, live at home, be on your parents medical, and just work any old job and do the graphic thing for fun. You may find in a year or two you get a break, or you decide to go a complete different way.
Live your life first, do what you love, and try to make it work
-instead of-
going to college, racking up debt, and majoring in something with no job prospects.

3d web technology–: Best field to go into withen the technological catagory?
i am currently 15 and i have a great interest in technology. Some right off the bat are Programming, 3d and 2d animation, robotics , web design, game Development etc. have basic understanding of all of them and some(web design) i am a little more advanced in. My skills include, all around creativity, artistically talented, Business instinct and (although not really a skill) a large amount motivation in machinery. My question is, what field would be the most profitable and/or best to invest time into? I enjoy all of them the same, just need some direction, thanks.
I’d also prefer to work for myself and build my own company someday

what you specialize in is less important than how well you do it. pick the one you enjoy the most, become the best at it and you will be successful

Well, you have to ask yourself where the mass demand will be in perhaps eight years time. There’s been a large baby-boom over the past few years in the English-speaking world, which shows no sign of stopping soon, so innovative toy and game design for clever eight-nine year olds might be one target. Toys will probably come with a raft of transmedia tie-ins, but will they catch children’s imagination and become part of children’s culture? There may even be explicit transmedia crossovers between toys and educational teach-yourself software as classrooms struggle to cope with the influx of kids. Find a way to get children to see that sort of product as ‘theirs’ rather than ‘boring school stuff’ and you’re rich.
Similarly there will be increasing needs among old people. These won’t be the same sort of old people who won the Second World War, and as ‘the 1960s generation’ they’ll will have different needs and demands – meaning new products and new forms of media and media-delivery. Audio books is one area that I think can only grow, as fast broadband means downloading 500Mb is not longer a challenge for most people and as more older people get online. Also specialist kitchens designed for the needs of old people – the fitted kitchen market is amazingly and stupendously huge.
So… I’m guessing perhaps a Product Design course at university? With specialisms that steer you away from the stereotypically tedious “new vacuum cleaner” or “concept car” final projects and toward things like small product interface design and combo ‘fun’/'useful’ devices?

This tutorial shows how to convert your standard 2d digital home videos to 3d stereoscopic anaglyph movies. This technique also applies to other forms of 3d applications or virtual eyewear. This video was edited in Premiere CS4 but can also be done in Final Cut Pro or Avid Media Composer. For this tutorial I used standard 2D HD video from my sony hdr sr11e digital camera.
