My first online connection was the fastest available at the time. It was a 16k dialup modem! I thought I was in HEAVEN when the 56k modems came out. I was so excited I had a second phone line installed so I could use the Internet (no WWW or “Web” then) without tying up the phone.

I’ve been using computers since Windows 3.11 and the days of CompuServe, AOL Version 2.5. Shhhh I’m telling my age.
I work in a Public Library and I am the ‘Accidental Systems Library Person’ (IT at Sr. Librarian’s salary 
though). Been at the library 17 years already and around 12 of those messing with computers.

No, but everything you learn about computers can be of help when designing Web sites.
I’ve been a Web developer for 15 years and it’s amazing what questions you get asked by your clients sometimes! They are always impressed if you can get them out of trouble, sometimes saving them a heap of money by not having to call someone out.
It’s good to know PHP, ASP, MYSQL, MSSQL, HTML, CSS, ACCESS, along with AJAX and Ruby on Rails, VBScript and ASP.net and how to setup POP e-mail for clients.
Big learning curve, but you don’t need to know it all at once!
Enjoy! It’s a great life developing Web sites!
