Science and Technology are making advances at an amazing rate. From telephones to the Internet, calculators to computers, cars to rockets and satellites. The Internet is, literally, a network of networks. It is made of thousands of interconnected networks spanning the globe. The computers that form the Internet range from huge mainframes in research establishments to humble PCs in people’s homes and offices. Despite the recent publicity, the web is not a new thing. For many businesses the web is becoming integral to their operations. Imagine the ability to send and receive data: messages, notes, letters, documents, pictures, video, sound- just about any form of communication, as effortlessly as making a phone call. It is easy to understand why the web is rapidly becoming the corporate communications medium. Technologies that were previously considered advanced are becoming commonplace and new technologies are still being developed. Educating oneself at one’s own place, pace and time is the best way to succeed in life and fill in the spare time at hand.
A great and unique thing about the web is that a single teacher can teach to the whole world that has access to the internet. It is clear that best teachers and best institutions are rare and it is not possible for the entire student to get education from good teachers and best institutions. Some will have financial problems some will have distance problems etc. But using the Web Technology, entire student of the world can read a single best book, can learn from a single best teacher, and can study in a single best institution like Oxford and Cambridge.
Another great thing about the Web is that you will always have the updated knowledge and you can publish your ideas to the whole world within minutes.
In your college or university library your will have a limited collection of books but on the web you will have unlimited numbers of books, articles, and tools that may not be available in every institution.
Everywhere in the world you will see a deficiency of teachers who can teach the new and updated knowledge, but on the web a single teacher can do.

I found your question interesting but too broad to give a definitive answer.
Here are some of my thought:
First try to narrow the question down. What is the internet, the web, commerce and “other technologies”.
In my mind the web and internet refer to the software, hardware, and communication standards that make a limited set of global communications possible. Specifically, internet protocols are what defines the web and the internet. (see the sources below, internet protocols)
Commerce is the exchange of something of value between two entities. That “something” may be goods, services, information, money, or anything else the two entities consider to have value.
Technology is a broad concept that deals with an animal species’ usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects an animal species’ ability to control and adapt to its environment.
Think about the other technologies used in commerce and compare them to how the internet protocol allow us to control and adapt our environment or on the “something of value” exchanged via the internet
The something of value is a key factor, it an information exchange not mean of transporting from one person to another physical goods.. Yes you can place an order, but the physical item are not delivered via the internet.
So, the internet is similar to other communication techs (telephone
TV, newspapers) but still there are differences
dissimilar tech (used in commerce) transportation tech (air,sea, land)
The internet is a communication based technologies and has evolved. Initial it was was used mostly for text message and the exchange of software but as the speed of communications increased it has acquired the ability to transfer voice and video.
With HTML and other protocol it became a method of publication
