    But my first “connection” was to a bbs using a super fast 300 baud modem back in the early 80′s.

    HTML…then
    Javascripts….(optional)
    Install Dreamweaver…then
    Learn Photoshop…then
    Study about ASP and PHP…then
    study and study!

    If you want to learn about Databases inWebsites, you should also study MySQL or MsSQL.

    then javascrpt and CSS for some client side work.
    then php or jsp or asp.net for some server side work.
    mySQL or oracle for database work.

    basically…
    start learning Photoshop to get minimum graphics knowledge requirements.
    then
    1- HTML
    2- Dreamweaver
    3- start making simple websites using templates to learn how designers slice up there layouts.
    4-CSS
    5-Database…start learn what database is and how to create it in simple technologies like Access for example.
    6-start learning about programming concepts and pick yourself a script language to start developping with like : ASP, PHP…
    7-get more deep creating databases by learning SQL (if you are using any microsoft technology) or MySQL (if you are using PHP)
    8-start making applications…and good luck
