Practice. Use your home computer as a server and try to solve the sort of problems you will encounter in the real world. Having a few good books for reference can’t hurt, either.
I would recommend being aware of security deficiencies in PHP, so you can avoid making the worst blunders. Never trust data from a client without verifying it!

Practice is right, and the most important, but it is also helpful to look at others’ code. Javascript is easy, if you see a webpage you like that does something neat (ie popup menus) look at the HTML source and see how it is done.
For PHP it is not quite as easy, since the code is on server side, but you can get opens source packeges on the internet and look at them.
Maybe you could even volunteer for an open source project in PHP. This way you could work with more experienced people, and get their suggestions.

We utilize several tools such as Omniture but need to define the next generation of metrics. “Zooms” on a map? “Hover Time” over content that pops up?

The most important metrics are only slightly different than the ones you probably already collect:
- Time spent waiting for data to be transmitted
- Bandwidth consumed per request
A little bit more difficult to measure is “task” – that is, an overall goal to be accomplished on the site. Measure things like:
- Number of clicks or steps to complete a task
- Overall time spent completing a task
Your examples, such as Zooms, fall under these metrics like “completing a task”.

you can track just about anything using minimally responded ajax calls.
a first cut at this, I tracked every event I had bound. I sent an ajax get request (that just returned a static xml, and was ignored by the client).
while cleaning it up, I cut down the number of event, and decided to accumulate the logging information and send it up every 30 seconds… It didn’t hurt the user interface, but made lots of extra calls on the server!
