Q&A–: What Web Technologies will I need to know for this project?
I have an ideal and a plan for a virtual community sort of like:
Neopets
Gaiaonline
MySpace
etc
I was wondering how these sites were made? What web languages were used to make them?
I am assuming PHP and Javascript, but I’m certain that there others–what are they? I want to make a website & have been designing the basics of it for sometime now. I feel that its high time that I begin building the site, so that I dont get caught in the “Planning/Early Development” stage for a year.
I’m hoping to build it between now & June of this year so I was wondering what sort of web technologies I would be needing to know to create such a site.
Also, are there any other bits of advice that anyone out there would like to offer as I prepare to undertake such a project–cause I’m all ears, having never done anything so big as this.
I plan on writing all content, & doing all the coding by hand &I am even planning on doing the graphics myself so advice on any of these topics = helpf

As well as PHP and JavaScript, I expect you’ll need a good knowledge of MySQL and probably Flash (ActionScript). Possibly Java as well. I’ve never undertaken a project of this magnitude so I don’t really have any advice to give you, but good luck!

Question–: HTML CSS and web technologies tutorial that teaches by recreating an example?
Most online web technology tutorials I see, teach feature by feature of the technology. For example, HTML tutorials go tag by tag. Playing with “try it yourself” toy examples on w3 schools is not helping, when faced with real life problems. I would like to see an example of a tutorial where it starts with a picture of a page and its functionality, and then plans out how to achieve it using all the technologies, and then finally shows the code. I want to access tutorials that bring out the design and thinking process. Please post links of nice tutorials/books like that, if you know.
