That’s such an individual thing. Appearance is always the most difficult for me because I’m not artistic. Development has never been a problem for me – applications, systems, web sites – they’re all fun to develop.

PHP and MySQL will be your best bet. They are very widely used and both technologies are free! A lot of commercial sites use PHP/MySQL. WordPress being just one prime example.

Web designing is art. No language. Technologies? Photoshop.
Languages are web development. HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript and SQL to start. (Programming before you start learning languages, though. Learning programming is NOT learning languages, it’s learning the science of programming.)

I highly recommend HTML dog for beginning. It is more user friendly than you could ask for. It also teaches you CSS (Cascading Style-Sheet; used for most things visual.). HTML Dog starts very introductory, but, at a good pace, progresses into quite advanced.
Once you complete everything there, got to www.w3schools.com .
People say it’s also very introductory to begin, but I thought it was medium-ish. W3schools has every tag for HTML and very extensive guides for CSS, JavaScript, XML, ASP, PHP, SQL and sooooo much more.
Hoped I helped. I think programming/web design is easy and fun. Being able to manipulate, replicate , create, test, and tweak things illegible to the untrained mind at your whim… It’s something you don’t feel doing many other things…
Also, if your intrested in the ‘darker’ side of the internet, hackthissite.org is great for just such. But before you skip this paragraph because of lack of intrest or your intimidated, I might add that not all hakers are bad. ALOT are used by businesses to test their own security. More commonly know as ‘Security Analysts’, their pay is high and everything they do is 100% legal. Just a thought. They are openly a part of the real hacker community and very accepted (well, theres Anti-Sec, but that another story…). Just gotta resist the temptation to do it wthout a contract, ya know?
Anyway just a thought. Another thought; If your going to be doing anything with web design, your gonna want Firefox. It can do everything internet explorer can do but easier, better, faster and can do alot more. Try without, then switch. It’ll make your life alot easier, with the right addons.

Learn HTML first, CSS second, and Javascript third. I think those are the three most important languages to learn to design websites.

It includes HTML, CSS, javascript, flash and some more advanced technologies. But for beginers these four are more than enough.
