Question–: Does the website directory size affect the speed of the web page?
Just curious, I am currently building a website. Some of my php pages are around 6-7kb each. The total size of my website directory folder is cumulatively large. But if I can keep my individual pages small, would the overall size of the folder impact the speed performance of my website?
The answer is probably no, but I want to make sure because I am so speed/file size conscious right now.

The file size will affect loading time. The directory size has no effect, but that’s determined by the number of files, not their size. (Folders are actually very small – all they hold is information about the files and pointers to them.)

The size of the directory has nothing to do with the download speed of the page. The way in which your PHP is coded does. For example, if your PHP page includes line of code that do nothing then it is not working at peak performance. The other thing to look out for is the resulting HTML paage. Remember PHP is used to Dynamically create an HTML page. The resulting HTML page can be long or short, include many images, CSS files, and Javascript files. Each file is resource that must be loaded. The number and size of each of those files affects the webpage’s load time. In PHP you can compress the data as you create it reducing the size of the resulting HTML page and other files.

My understanding is that you have ASP.Net to build your dynamic website, with IIS to publish web pages and SQL server as the database for the website. Am i correct? If u have a server running 24-7 what application does the website constantly sit on?

Mot sites use the Apache web server with Mysql on Linux. Whichever way you do this the server needs to be a publicly registered machine, with correct dns settings for its’ domain.

It sits on the IIS Server processed by the .NET framework. Depending on what framework the site is built on (1.0, 2.0,3.0, 3.5) it will all be housed and HTTP calls will be made to IIS and returned to the browser. When you install an asp.net website, there will be an ASP.NET tab in the properties.
As for SQL, the web.Config file holds the connection string that will link the the SQL database and your SqlClient or OleDb will “do its thing.” All of this is done by the .NET Framework.
