Hopping Mad about the Financial Crisis

Nassim Nicholas Taleb was challenged to define a Black Swan, while standing on one foot.
But today: "My outrage is aimed at the scientist-charlatan putting society at risk using statistical methods. This is similar to iatrogenics, the study of the doctor putting the patient at risk."
The financial markets today provided a timely context for the release of his new essay –
A Map of the Limits of Statistics:
"The banking system, betting against rare events, just lost over 1 Trillion dollars (so far) on a single error, more than was ever earned in the history of banking".
The Domains on screen are very different… Some notes I took while reading his book:
• Mediocristan
Collective, routine, obvious
Services – paid by the hour
gravity – body shapes, mountains
Bell curve, Poisson, Gaussian
Ignore outliers
Large numbers
Regression to mean
Black-Scholes
• Extremistan
Singular, accidental, unseen
Book sales, websites, wealth, population of cities, languages, size of companies, financial markets
Pareto Optimal, 80/20 -> 50/1
Power laws, scale free, preferential attachment
Economics – winner take all, network effects
Technology – network effects, Moore’s Law, accelerating change

Songs included a lot of their ‘golden oldie’ stuff plus some clasical, rap and 3 of their most recent ‘hit singles…. ‘Baa baa black sheep, twinkle twinkle little star & I’m the king of the castle your the dirty wee rascal’. All the dinner guests joined in singing along with to their songs.

My ✡Tallit✡ & ✡Kippa✡

Image by † Jimmy MacDonald †
I bought my ✡Tallit ✡ from www.bennyhinn.org and my ✡Kippa✡ from a local synagogue in Glasgow. I like the thought of when I spend time… personal private time with God in prayer I am literally wrapped in God’s Word.
Numbers 15:37-40 (NIV)
[Tassels on Garments:]
…"Speak to the Israelites and say to them: Throughout the generations to come you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments, with a blue cord on each tassel. You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember all the commands of the LORD, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves by going after the lusts of your own hearts and eyes…".
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. … [Psalm 102:6 KJV]
And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of he earth be blessed. [Genesis 12:3 KJV]
*Scotland is the only European country [to my knowledge] which has no history of state persecution of Jews, and I’m so glad about this*.

American Southwest, in Passing

While driving east on Highway 89, this landscape near the Painted Desert is photographed from the open passenger window.
Please read this quotation from Ruskin about looking up at the open sky:
cloudappreciationsociety.org/ruskin/
It is from the website of one of my favorite groups in flickr.
No, I was not the driver, LOL! Thanks to Mark for letting me try shooting photos through all the windows of his car while he was driving along on our way to Coal Mine Canyon. Mark’s theory is that the red tone in the clouds was caused by the red soil and rocks reflecting up onto the clouds. Seemed like that could be right, as we were in a marvelous area near the Painted Desert. The light was spectacular from the quickly-changing weather conditions. We’d just come out of a snow flurry in Flagstaff and had a tiny bit of rain here and there until we found beautiful skies northeast of here.

Take a theater full of people. Do a statistical analysis on all the characteristics that you can think of to describe those people. For the most part, the individuals will be weakly correlated on most things, except perhaps their choice of movies.
Now yell fire.
All of these uncorrelated people run to the exits en masse, some get hurt, some may be trampled in the panic. The only thing these people have in common is their desire to live.
All chaotic systems and dynamic equilibriums, like capitalism, have a tipping point, when small correlations are amplified and lead to results that cannot be described by a statistical analysis of the ensemble — a Butterfly Effect.
The challenge is how to run a business, how to live your life, within the context of this reality.

Did he discuss that the current financial crisis, though reported as a problem with mortgage backed securities, really was only tipped by them. Mortgage backed securities can be unscrambled back to the original loans which are backed by real estate, even if the only value there is a pile of mold-prone gypsum board. However, the other instruments financial firms have, the intertwined web of promises, have no intrinsic value. "Value" is nothing but empty promises. Including short-term commercial paper, this weekend’s reported problem.
How did Taleb bet against this to make money for his clients?
