Is web development a sub category of software development? i.e. If I am a web developer, can I call myself as a software programmer?

Not so sure about you categorizing yourself there…but I know that my downstairs tenant is a “software engineer” and he specializes in PHP and MySQL and worked with Verizon Wireless. If you know what those are. Clarify technologies.

Yes web development is a sub-category of software development, and you could call yourself a programmer, software engineer, etc. However, it’s best to keep specific so as not to misrepresent your skill set to others.
Just so we’re clear, a web developer is someone who makes web based applications and not just html/css/design. Those are necessary components to being a web developer, but not sufficient to calling yourself a programmer. You need to be adept in at least one programming language that is suitable for building web apps (i.e. php, python, perl, C++, java). Actually almost any server side language can be used to build web software.

Web Design Software to aid in design elements: Adobe Photoshop, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Flash, Director etc…
Web Development Knowledge: Dreamweaver, Pure coding depending on project (html, javascript, asp, aspx, php, jsp, java, c+, actionscript (flash), xml, cfm, sql for database queries) and so on…
Servers: Mainly Linux (apache) or Windows (iis)
Databases: MS Access, MS SQL, MySQL, Oracle etc…
