Question: What should I study to prepare for the future of web design? (i.e. flash, css?, etc)?

Rainy:The pictures have nothing to do with the content!!
I’m a student and have some freelance background experience in developing website layouts and doing some graphic design. I want to commit to web design and learn a web language that will really help me get the skills I need to specialize as a Front End Web Designer.
I’m thinking of trying the following:
1) HTML & CSS from the ground up (hopefully then HTML5)
2) FLASH action scripting and then advanced action scripting
3) Learning Motion Graphic (i.e. 3D Studio Max)
Does any web designer out there know what the best way to go is? I hear now that Flash is a dying technology and that websites won’t use it soon – is that true?
I want to study something that will help me develop websites but also enable me to work with videos, media, web motion and much more.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Andrew

I’d still learn Flash as its not like its going to die overnight. But theres a lot of cool things coming up in the new HTML. I’d also learn jquery, that can do a lot for a site.
sounds like you already got a pretty good idea of what to learn to get yourself going.

One of the reasons flash is considered a die-ing tech is purely because Apple decided not to include it in the iPad, so of course apple fans had to explain away that flaw SOMEHOW

If you want to commit to web design then i’d recommend staying away from learning Flash and Motion Graphic.
Flash isn’t used in web design any more. Flash is mainly used for video’s, online games, and specialized programs that run on the web. It may help you out to learn a little Flash, but don’t let it take away from your time of learning more important web design related skills.
Here’s what you’ll need to know to be a good Front End Web Designer.
HTML
CSS – Table-less layouts
javascript / jQuery
Once you master those you’ll want to know at least one web programing language. I’d recommend PHP since it’s the most widely used language on the web.
You’ll also want to know about design theory and what makes a good layout. Knowing how to code a good website is one thing, but knowing how to design a good website is another.
There are a ton of blogs and tutorial sites on the web that can help you learn some of the tricks of the trade. Books are good to get a good foundation, but I find them to be boring and not very relevant to current trends being used on the web.
